Slovenia - Predjama Castle - THE castle to visit.

Slovenia has many castles to visit, but if you only visit one of them make it Predjama Castle. The location is really unique. The inventory of the Castle is unfortunately sparse but it is very well restored and well worth the detour. Spending an hour in this castle gives you a glimps of the harsh living conditions in that period. We were there in May when the sun was shining and outside temperatures were above 20°C but we were chilled to the bone by the cold and the constant humidity inside at the end of the short visit.

This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious and impregnable castle has been perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-metre high cliff for more than 700 years. The undoubtedly most famous of all castle inhabitants was the knight Erazem of Predjama, who rebelled against the imperial autocracy in the 15th century. A tip: don't eat in the small restaurant at the entrance of the Castle. The place is manned with the only rude and impolite people we met on our 4 day trip in Slovenia. The two local cave-dwellers serving in the restaurant were living proof that lack of sun and light does nothing to improve one's disposition :-) I must say that they were very consequent, they didn't just treat us with arrogant disdain but other travellers from other nationalities were reserved the same happy treatment!
